Beyond the demo table, your observer is picking up transmissions from anyone else in the building running the same radio configuration. The stream is worth watching carefully. Not every node at the event will match your settings — some visitors operate different platforms, and others may be on regional frequency plans that diverge from the North American coordination standard. The nodes that appear in your Live Packets are the ones already interoperable with your network. Those are the contacts worth making deliberately.
One thing the map won’t show you: nodes that are in the building but not reaching your observer. Waev only draws what your enrolled observers can verify — an empty screen doesn’t mean empty airwaves, it means those transmissions didn’t make it to your infrastructure. That distinction matters when you’re trying to assess regional MeshCore density: the nodes you see are a floor, not a ceiling.
The edges that appear and disappear

You’re seeing the population of active MeshCore operators who showed up to an in-person radio event in your area. That’s a real number.
It also tells you something structural. Which of your repeaters attracted the most activity? A relay that becomes a hub for temporary contacts during a hamfest is almost certainly your best-placed infrastructure — for the same reasons it anchors coverage for emergency operations. Concentrated temporary traffic is an unintentional load test that a quiet Tuesday can’t replicate.
After the tables fold
The contacts you make at a hamfest don’t all disappear with the packet stream. If you exchanged contact codes via QR at the table, or if a visitor’s direct messages reached your node and you acknowledged them, those contacts persist in your node’s memory. The next time they’re within range of your infrastructure — at a public service event, at a club net night, on a park trail — the path is already known.
